Moving can be joyful and sad at the same time. For a person moving into their first home, moving can be one of the happiest times in a person’s life. The joy of home ownership and the sense of accomplishment that comes along with it are all reasons to be happy. However, moving out of that first home or moving out of state can sometimes bring many other emotions. Deciding whether or not to hire a mover can be one more stressful aspect of moving.

If the move will be taking you out of state or out of the country it would be best advised to hire professionals. If you have many large pieces, especially if they are fragile in nature, again it would probably be best to hire a mover. If you are simply moving out of your parent’s house for the first time and have very few belongings then this is the kind of move that you could probably do without movers. Sometimes even if you are only moving a few items it is best to hire someone to help you. If there are a lot of steps involved or difficult corners to maneuver then the moving is probably best left to professionals.

When choosing a mover, do your research. Ask your friends and neighbors for recommendations. People who have had a very bad experience with movers will want to tell you all about it. Equally so, people who have had a very good experience will want to share that as well. Be sure that the movers you hire have adequate insurance to cover all of your belonging. Ask questions. Make sure that everything you are moving will fit into the truck. Have the movers come to assess your belongings before the move to make sure that the right size truck is provided.

Another decision you will need to make is if you will pack your own items or if you will pay the movers to pack for you. This can be very costly as most movers charge by the hour and packing boxes is a very time consuming part of moving. However, if the move will be especially hard for you for some reason it may be advisable to have someone else pack your belongings to take some of the difficulty out of the whole situation.

Your overall health and well being should be factored in as well. If you are elderly or have back problems then moving is probably something that you should no be doing on your own. Even a minor back problem can be exacerbated by improper lifting during a move. Lifting the correct way is very important. Bending your legs to pick up boxes and furniture as opposed to bending at the waist can save your back from additional problems.

Using a moving company or not will ultimately be your decision and one that you will take much time to decide on. Consider the amount of work you will have to do prior to the actual move and after the actual move. Isn't that enough? Leave the actual moving to the professionals and then you will be more adequately prepared for the unpacking once everything has arrived at your new place.
